R.E - A place of Worship

 PLACES OF WORSHIP

In Room 9 we are learning about the places of worship in Jesus' time. We have been learning about the Jerusalem temple, the place where Jesus went to pray.

We have been comparing the temple to our church and were amazed at the differences, 

For example: 

- Women were only allowed in a certain place (The Court of Women)

- There was a place where money was collected. This is called the treasury. 

- The size difference! The temple is huge!

- The materials in the church were very ornamental and looked very expensive 

- Everyone is welcomed in our church and people aren't separated

Now we are recreating our own version of the Jerersulum Temple. 

First, we had to create a blueprint of our temple. This had the have the places in the temple and notes of what we would need to create it. 

Here are some photos of us working on our designs. Lots of great korero (discussion) about what we want to use to make it realistic and using math concepts. We have our blueprint with us so we can make changes as we see fit.

Room 9s Virtual Reality Experience!

 

VIRTUAL REALITY 

Blake Foundation 

We were lucky enough to have the Sian from the Blake Foundation come and visit us at school and give us a tour of Marine reserves and ecosystysmes in the North Island using Virtual Reality. 

We began by using the VR headsets and looking at Whakarri Island an active volcanoes. We were able to see divers who were 30 metres above us. This was an area that was fill of fish and seaweed. We learnt that seaweed gives oxygen and that the ocean gives 50% of oxygen for humans. 

We then compared two places, one marine reserve on Goat Island and an unproteced marine reserve. We saw underwater in Goat Island in 2014 and then compared to 2019. The difference was incredibly sad! Goat Island is now a protected Marine Resevre. 

We analysed the two different times and compared the visual differences. 

In 2014 the ocean was clear, you could see the divers who were above us (30ms!!!!!). We could see lots of different fish, which is called biodiversity. The water was clean and there was lots of seaweed. It was a healthy environment.

Camp Photos

Year 7/8 camp

Our intermediates had an absolute blast at Wainui Camp. At camp they pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and overcame fears. 

Highlights for them were kayaking around the bay, touching extinct volcanic rock and exploring caves. Another activity they loved was coasteering up rocks, trudging through water and jumping off rocks. 

We were lucky enough to have amazing parents helping, who encouraged our students to take risks and give these new experiences ago. With great food, fun and new experiences and wakingup to the song of Crazy Frog, these students are already asking to go back. 

A massive thank you to the parent helpers who took time out of their own busy lives to make this camp a success. 

Surfing T1 2022

Surfing 

In Room 9, we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to participate in a surfing lesson down at New Brighton Beach. This was run by the Duke Festival. When we got there, we were introduced to the instructors and then they got us to identify the parts of a surfboard. 

Here is an example of the parts of a surfboard by Scarlett. 

After we identified the parts of the surfboard, we then learnt how to safely get on the surfboard whilst in the water. It was very tricky remembering the different steps but even trickier when getting on the board when in the water. It was very easy to get off balance and fall in! Though, I do think that was where a lot of the enjoyment came from. 

After we learnt how to get on the board, we got in the water and gave it a go ourselves. For some of us, this was the very first time that we had gotten on a surfboard! It was awesome to see everyone give it a go and commit to the fall off when hitting the waves.

Korean Zoom Call

Korean 

In year 7/8, the intermediates are given the chance to learn Korean as their second language. This term we have had a huge focus on the alphabet which is called Hangul, a focus on introducing ourselves and asking others what their name was. 

Last week, we were very fortunate to connect with a school in Korea. The children we spoke to were in year 8 and year 9 and they had been learning how to speak English as their second language. 

Using our new phrases learnt in Korean, we introduced ourselves and asked for their names. They also asked us in English what our names were and what we liked to eat. As part of our Korean lessons, we will continue zooming in on our buddy school once a month, to catch up and trial our new learning in a real life context. 

In room 9, we found it very interesting that they sat at tables in rows, they had no tv and there wasn't much in their classroom. We are excited to zoom call them again next term! 

ART, ART, ART

ABSTRACT AND CREATIVE JOURNALING 

Today we had the amazing Georgia Harmon from Toi Collective take us for a lesson on art. We focused on creative journaling. This was a task that was set for the students to create something that reflected something that they loved/liked. It could have been a colour or a place, it could have been food or it could have been something to do with their name. 

We had a range of resources that the students were able to use; this included paint, paint pens, vivids, fabrics, sponges, pencils and more. They had free range of what they created as we wanted it to represent who they are as a person.
